Removing Wallpaper - Maybe This Was a Bad Idea

Wallpaper, like many building materials has made some significant strides in design and application within the last few years. Wallpaper has gone through the traditional cycles of:

• Birth as a new idea - being that cool new thing (long time ago)
• Adolescence - not having a good time in the market, consumers begin to form negative opinions about the product.
• Rebirth - new designs and applications helping it become a viable option once again

Whether you like wallpaper or not, there will come a time when you will want/need to remove it - what will you do? Keep in mind these basic truths about wallpaper:

1. Most processes will require some degree of physical scraping, be careful when scraping not to gouge the wall as this will create the need for drywall repair.
2. Liquid based applications (including steam) will soften the surface of the wall, making it that much more susceptible to gouging.
3. Often times there are multiple layers of wallpaper.

The strategies for dealing with wallpaper basically fall into either of two categories, removal or covering. I have compiled a list of those basic strategies with what I have experienced as the upside/downside associated with each.
Removing Wallpaper:
There are several topical and chemical treatments that claim to be the cure all for removing wallpaper. These products seem to offer that you can spray this liquid on and within a short period of time the wallpaper will get the hint, back up its bags and basically walk itself out the door. How nice it would be if it were that simple but it rarely is.
Some have claimed that water alone will do the trick, I've never found this to be true unless it was an unsafe (from a potential water damage standpoint) amount of water. It may be worth a try, especially if your wallpaper is already peeling, just be careful not to wet the surface beyond what can be dried relatively quickly.
Steam processes can be helpful, which will require either purchasing or renting a steaming unit. A common problem that I have found is that many of the cheaper units don't emit enough pressure or hot enough steam to disengage the wallpaper. To date, the right steaming equipment, hot steam (300*F) at a decent pressure (up to 75psi), has been the most effective tool that I have used when removing wallpaper. Using a wide head with a towel wrapped over it delivers the right amount of heat, pressure and moisture.
Covering Wallpaper:
Sealing/priming the wallpaper, I know of contractors who do this and have claimed that it works pretty well. I don't recommend this route as I think it is a short term solution and in the long run could end up causing more work and cost. If you are going to seal the wallpaper:
1) Make sure that the wallpaper is in good shape - good bond with no bubbling;
2) Check the seams of the wallpaper, these can often telegraph through paint, use light coating of joint compound to conceal these before priming;
3) Use an oil-based sealing primer.
Some claim that they like to skim coat the wallpaper, using a topping compound to cover/seal the wallpaper and then apply texture. The problem with wallpaper is that the compound might not bond with the wallpaper or the moisture from the topper or compound may cause bubbling behind the wallpaper.
With the addition of better products and more contemporary design, you may be able to resurface your wallpaper with an updated version. Check the manufacturer's recommendations for the product, but if you existing wallpaper is in good shape it may be a good candidate for recovering. Newer wallpapers offer a host of color and even texture options.
If you are handy with drywall or have someone that can install it within your budget, ¼" drywall can used to resurface the area. This may cause some concerns for the base, window and door trims of most walls, but may be effective for certain areas.
If the wallpaper is only on the bottom half of the wall, you could install wainscoting cut to height and trimmed with a chair rail. Another option would be to use ¼" drywall instead of wainscoting, the drywall could be adorned with picture frames constructed out of more drywall or wood trim, or just finished with a nice chair rail. Whenever you divide the wall into two sections, utilizing a different color can make for a nice touch of design, whether you use a shade darker or a complementary color.
In my experience, the most effective method for dealing with wallpaper is to remove it. Removing the wallpaper takes the risk of bubbling or texture/seam transfer out of the equation. Proper removal is often tedious but can be done effectively and in a reasonable time frame.

Mending Minor Wallpaper Rips

No matter how well you have hung your house wallpaper, it is still subject to wear and tear. As wallpaper ages through time, their adhesives weaken, the edges rip, and the colors fade. There are also some areas in the house where damage is unavoidable and more likely --- kids' rooms fall in this category. Kids wallpapers are more exposed to stains and damage.
Damage will inevitably manifest itself as tears and rips in the material. However, you can still fix some of the imperfections provided you still have extra rolls of your wallpaper and borders. For other materials such as vinyl adhesive, a trip to your local home improvement store will offer what you need.
A simple tear can be re-glued almost inconspicuously. Same goes for visible seams that are the result of house wallpaper sections that have lifted themselves from the wall. The repair process is easy -- you just need to moisten the loose paper with a damp sponge, lift the paper from the wall, spread a thin layer of adhesive to its back, press it back to the wall, and roll the area with a seam roller. Sponge off any extra adhesive. Voila! Your house wallpaper is mended and looks nearly brand new.
For other imperfections, you just need to do the following:
Air bubbles - Air bubbles occur when an amount of air or a piece of debris is trapped between the wallpaper and the wall, resulting in tiny bulges on the surface of your wallpaper and borders. They are easily fixed though: If the air bubble contains a small piece of debris, just cut a small X mark on the spot, peel back the rips, remove the rubble, apply a thin layer of vinyl adhesive on the flaps and press the paper back to the wall, then roll them flat. If the bubble contains only air, fill a glue-injecting syringe with a small amount of thinned ready-mix adhesive; make a small slit on the bubble with a razor knife and squirt the adhesive through the slit. Roll the surface flat and wipe off any adhesive excess from the house wallpaper.
Big rips and tears - this kind of damage is commonly suffered by kids wallpaper, bathroom wallpaper, and kitchen wallpaper and borders. For problems like these, you need to patch them with wallpaper that bears the same pattern. This is where extra rolls come in handy.
1. With a utility knife, cut a piece from the spare wallpaper (make sure it's larger than the damaged area), and then place it over the torn area while trying to match the pattern of the wallpaper.
2. Once you match the design, hold the extra wallpaper in place with blue safety tapes.
3. Trace the edges of the spare wallpaper with a razor, cutting the damaged wallpaper in the process.
4. Remove the spare wallpaper and moisten the damaged area with water to loosen the adhesive.
5. Remove the damaged area. Use a putty knife for vestiges you can't lift with your finger.
6. Clean the wall surface where the new piece of wallpaper will be pasted. Apply primer if you are down to raw wall.
7. Apply wall covering adhesive to the new wallpaper and carefully place it on the wall.
8. Wipe off any excess adhesive with a damp sponge then roll the surface flat. Wipe off any moisture.
There are certain damages, though, that are irreparable, usually seen in kids wallpaper. The only solution here would be to redo the wall with new wallpaper.

How to Hang Wallpaper

Creating a feature wall with wallpaper is a great way to add colour, texture and personality to your home. Choose a wall that has maximum impact when you walk into the room. You can create a feature wall in your entrance hallway, your bedroom, living or dining areas. So many choices!
If you're a handy type of person, then you'll probably have no trouble hanging your own wallpaper. Here are some instructions to help you hang your wallpaper and create a beautiful feature wall.
You will need:

• Glue - prepare as directed
• Paste - prepare as directed
• Measuring tape
• Box cutter/stanley knife
• Large steel ruler or spirit level
• Paint roller
• Paint brush
• Soft cloth

Step 1. Preparation
Your wall must be clean, smooth and dry. So sweep away those old cobwebs and get rid of dust, dirt and grime. We find that washing your walls with sugar soap and a one of those big fat orange or yellow sponges you use to wash your car is a great way to clean them.
Sand away any irregularities. Putty any holes. Always remove old wall coverings before applying new wallpaper.
Step 2. Prepare the Glue and Paste
Most glue and paste mixes require some time to set before applying them to the wallpaper, so prepare the mixture first to save yourself some time.
Follow the instructions on your packet of glue and paste.
Typically, paste is to be applied to the back of the wallpaper and glue is to be applied to the wall in a border around where the edge of the wallpaper will be applied.
Step 3. Measure and Cut the Wallpaper
This is the most difficult step if you have a pattern that repeats and needs to be matched. Always make sure you start with enough wallpaper to allow for an occasional mistake.
Measure the height of your walll. Allow an extra 5cm (2 inches) for trimming. Roll out the wallpaper and note where you have to cut it. Carefully cut the paper using a box cutter or stanley knife against a steel ruler or large spirit leveller. Roll out more wallpaper and match the pattern. Cut the wallpaper and discard the unmatched portion.
Continue measuring, matching and cutting the wallpaper until you have all the pieces to complete your feature wall.
Mark points vertically along your wall so that as you are hanging the wallpaper, you can check to make sure it's in a straight line.
Step 4. Apply the Adhesive
Use a paint roller to liberally apply the paste to the back of the wallpaper, from top to bottom. After you have applied the paste, fold the wallpaper in on itself and again until it is only 30cm or so wide. Put it in a large plastic garbage bag and set it aside for 30 minutes to allow the paste to absorb into the wallpaper. Continue with each strip of wallpaper. Keep folding the wallpaper until it is a size that will comfortably fit in a plastic bag or garbage bag. Remove the air from the plastic bag and seal it to help prevent the wallpaper from drying out as it will be some time before you're ready to hang the final strip.
After you have waited the requisite time for your paste to set, apply the glue to the wall in a border around where the edge of the wallpaper will be. Use the pencil marks you made earlier to guide you. Your border should be about 10cm (3 to 4 inches) wide.
Step 5. Hang the Wallpaper
Start at the top and we usually work from left to right. Don't forget your extra 5cm (2 inch) trim at the top! Use your hands and soft sponge to smooth the wallpaper against the wall. Then use a plastic lathe to lightly smooth the wallpaper and remove the air bubbles and excess paste. Use the marks on the wall to make sure you're hanging the wallpaper in a straight line.
Use a soft cloth to remove any excess glue from the edges.
Match the wallpaper edges exactly. If you find there is a small gap between each wallpaper strip, work from the centre of the strip and gently massage the wallpaper in the direction of the gap. Use your hands or a special wallpaper roller. Do the same from the other side.
It is important to smooth the surface of the wallpaper while it is still damp from the paste to ensure all air bubbles are removed. Keep removing the excess glue, too and keep an eye on any air bubbles that may arise as the paste dries.
When you have hung each strip, cut off the excess trim at the top and bottom.
After you've cleaned up, it's time to step back and admire your handy work!
